Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Year 2 Show
Huge congratulations to our Year 2 students for their thoroughly entertaining performance for families today! They charmed us all with their singing, acting, and clear storytelling. A big thank you to all the staff who supported them in putting on such a great show. Well done, Year 2! Those who missed the show can watch a recording of the live stream here.

Considering purchasing your child a smartphone?
Last week, we hosted a parent webinar with expert guests from ‘Look Up Hong Kong’. The guest panel included a doctor, author, parent and local researcher who shared valuable insights into the potential downsides for younger children in owning their own smartphones. Look Up Hong Kong recognises that if parents agree to delay giving their children smartphones, the peer pressure instantly reduces. Saying no to children’s smartphone requests can feel impossible when you’re alone. Acting collectively makes it infinitely easier. If you are interested in signing the Look Up Hong Kong parent pact in order to join other parents in delaying the purchase of smartphones for your children, please click here. The website also contains lots of other useful resources and advice for parents. The work from Look Up Hong Kong aligns with research, including that of Jonathan Haidt in his book, "The Anxious Generation", that was discussed in an earlier parent webinar (the recording can be found here). If you are considering purchasing your child a smartphone or your child is already requesting one, we recommend making an informed decision based on the research and information presented.
By limiting personal devices for students, we aim to support students' cognitive development and ensure that their attention is directed towards learning and building genuine connections with their peers and teachers. We believe that these years are crucial for developing strong social skills and a deep engagement with the curriculum, which can be hindered by the constant presence of personal technology. We plan to continue sharing information and insights on this topic in the coming weeks, perhaps focusing on different aspects and incorporating relevant quotes to keep the conversation going.
Also, a little reminder from our recent coffee morning with the West Island School Principal and senior leaders: mobile phone use is not permitted at WIS, and there is no need to have a smartphone at WIS.
Yearbook 2024/25
This is a reminder that the deadline for ordering this year’s Yearbook Order is Friday, 9 May. The books are printed to order, so copies cannot be purchased after this date. To order, sign the e-notice on Gateway. Once the books are printed, they will be sent to your child’s classroom in the last 2 weeks of June.
Hats, Hats, Hats!
Please ensure your child brings a hat to school every day. As the days are getting hotter again, we are seeing a growing number of children not protected from the sun. Please help us keep your child safe from sunburn by ensuring they have a school hat with them. Please order the hat or other school uniform items online or visit the store.
Warm regards,
Brenda

Swimming is underway
We are very happy to see our students working hard to improve their swimming this term. Here is a message from the swim coaches. Students who have been keeping up with their swimming during the winter months are definitely reaping the rewards of their swim training. Please ensure that your child has everything they need to be ready for their swimming lesson.
Due to Year 6 WIS Transition lessons next week, there have been some minor changes to the swimming timetable. Please check your child’s swimming lesson schedule on the timetable here.
Diary Date: Year 4 Swim Gala Friday 20th June 9.00 am to 12.00 pm at HKU Henry Fok Swimming Pool (opposite our school). All parents of Year 4 swimmers are welcome to attend.
Cricket News
Sadly our Kennedy cricket teams were unable to play in the HKPSSA Island Cricket Tournament this week due to the bad weather on Wednesday. However we look forward to more training together as a team to be ready for the event to be rearranged in the near future. If your child plays regular cricket, please feel free to contact me about your child joining our club.
Recent Kennedy Sports Achievements
During the long weekend, it was great to hear about our students in action on the sports grounds. Congratulations to the following students:
Josie Li (2D) who participated in the inter-school mini tennis district event on May 5th. Josie took on opponents from other schools across Hong Kong and secured first place! As a result, she has been invited to participate in the HK Annual Championship. We’re hopeful for more good news when she competes against winners from other districts at the Tennis Hong Kong Annual Championship at the end of this month. We wish her the best of luck in this next event.
Laurence Hyde (4K) and his U9 Hong Kong Boas team competed in the Labour Champions Cup Junior Football Tournament in Shenzhen on May 4-5 2025. The team showcased amazing skill, clinching the championship title! Congratulations to Laurence and his teammates for their incredible victory!
Jade Jiang (4R) competed in the Aqua Elite Splashing Stars Swim Meet 2025 on 1 May. Her time of 22.8 seconds bagged her a silver medal and a 6th place finish in backstroke. Well done to Jade for competing against children from both international and local schools across Hong Kong.
Charlie Crompton (4R) and his U9 team won the Labour Day Futsal Challenge Cup at Po Hong Park. The team overcame formidable opposition in the group stages and won the final with a close 1-0 victory. Fantastic work everyone!
Coming Up: Year 4’s Favourite Colour Dress-Up Day!
On Friday 23 May, Year 4 will be leading a Favourite Colour Dress-Up Day for the entire school! Students are encouraged to come dressed in their favourite colour or a mix of colours to celebrate creativity and self-expression. To make this event even more special, we kindly ask for a small donation of $20, which will go towards funding a creative workshop for Year 4, led by the talented artist El McColl.
Thank you for your support—we look forward to a vibrant and colourful day ahead!
